GPS and satellite based navigation and positioning
For managing transport vehicle in non-roofed warehouses an satellite based positioning system is eventually useable for giving information about location, status and profile of vehicle and bin location. With that information a storage host computer can control vehicles and goods movements.
Disadvantage of all satellite based systems is the missing intervisibility to a sufficient number of satellites. Also the positioning is quiet unexact for logistics. Using it indoor is not possible and outdoor this system can not work from a certain height of packs.
RFID positioning / RTLS
In every company in which the satellite based system is not satisfying or inefficient alternative solution for identification and/or positioning can be realised by RFID-transponders.
RFID based systems are used where product carriers or products have to be identified and localised in halls or defined bin locations outdoor. According to requirements the transponders are fixed or at the object located.
By the help of a net composed of passive transponders with the size of matches in the floor Track+Race clears an apparently chaotic warehouse system. The warehouse managing system always knows the exact location of a good. All goods movements are detected automatically and entered online. By that the efficiency is increasing obviously.
Additional RFID-transponder can be embedded in the floor at important markers, crossings or hall gates. That opens new applications, cause the system knows the position of the forklift truck.
The navigation system works like in a car. The operator is leaded to the destination. That especially makes sense in huge warehouses and for new workers.
Changes in action are considered. At the warehouse layout the forklift truck operator see himself an the destination constantly, at the Lagerleitstand he can see the positions of all forklift trucks. By double clicking the vehicle transfer order, loading etc. can be shown.
The Italian wholesaler of customized cable products SADA CAVI is using since February 2007 a solution that made more transparency and facilitated an enormous increase in productivity.
Furthermore regulations concerning inlet and transit can be realised, speed limits can be forced or driving to warehouse equipment like traffic lights and fast course gates can be made.
Unthinkable when using bar code systems.
Some examples for sensible use of real time position detection are people and documents tracking (tracking of patients, non-employees in safety areas or books in libraries). For that passive or active transponder systems are used.
